FDP on Communicating Effectively in the Classroom: Communication Skills for Teachers

A one-day FDP on "Communicating Effectively in the Classroom: Communication Skills for Teachers" was held on June 13, 2019, at SDMIMD. The FDP focused on understanding the barriers to communicating effectively in the classroom and discussed the techniques to overcome the same. The importance of a teacher as a leader in the classroom and the impact they can have on students was emphasized. The changing role of a teacher in the 21st century was discussed.

Topics such as verbal and non-verbal communication, managing time and the need to design effective visuals to sustain interest were highlighted.

Thirty-one faculty from SDM MMK College for Women attended the FDP for which the resource person was Dr Neetu Ganapathy. Dr M.V. Sunil the coordinator of the program was present.

MDP on Essentials of Business Analytics

A two-day MDP on Essentials of Business Analytics was held on 12 and 13 June 2019. Prof. Mohamed Minhaj was the resource person for the program. The program provided a comprehensive introduction to the domain of analytics.  The discussion about the difficulties involved in managerial decision making served as an icebreaker. Later, the role that analytics can play in better decision making was discussed.  After discussing several use-cases like Market Basket Analysis, Remarketing, and Sentiment Analysis the approach, techniques and tools for analytics were deliberated upon . The program also had hands-on sessions pertaining to Machine Learning using a open-source software. Dr. Sunil M. V coordinated the event.

Workshop on 'Controlling a Project' by Prof Aro-Gordon

Dr Stephen Aro-Gordon, Professor, Department of Business and Accounting, Muscat College, Sultanate of Oman; conducted a workshop on "Controlling a Project: Understanding the Earned Value Management (EVM) Technique" for the finance specialization students of PGDM 2017-19 Batch on June 7 & 8, 2019 at SDMIMD. Dr Aro Gordon has been earlier associated with the Institute as an Adjunct Faculty.

Foundation Day Lecture 2019

 
At city’s B School SDMIMD, this forenoon, it seemed as if it was the day to experience business of space as virtual reality. Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) was celebrating “Foundation Day” and the invited speaker was Space Scientist Dr K Radhakrishnan, Former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and Former Chairman, Indian Space Commission. Dr Radhakrishnan, started his talk, recalling memories of his first visit to SDMIMD during 1996 and Dr Veerendra Heggade Dharmadhikari of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala and President Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational (SDME) Trust and said only ‘good human beings become leaders’. Further, in his talk, Dr Radhakrishnan gave overview of ISRO’s success journey over 50 years of service to the nation. His talk was truly linked to ISRO’s vision which states “harness space technology for national development while pursuing space science research and planetary exploration”.
 
Talking on successful launching of satellites by India, Dr Radhakrishnan, said India launched Aryabhata in collaboration with Soviet Union in 1975. That was followed by SLV-3. Then came launch of two famous Rockets PSLV for launching satellites into polar orbits and the GSLV for placing satellites into geostationary orbits. In 2014, ISRO used an indigenous cryogenic engine in a GSLV-D5 launch of the GSAT-14. ISRO sent a lunar orbiter, Chandrayaan-1, during 2008 and a Mars obiter during 2013, which entered Mars orbit on 24 September 2014 making India the First Nation to succeed on its first attempt to Mars and ISRO the fourth space agency in the world as the first space agency in Asia to reach Mars orbit.
 
He mentioned the launch of twenty satellites in a single vehicle on 15 February 2017 and the launch of one hundred and four satellites in a single rocket (PSLV-C37) which is a world record. 
 
During the Q&A, Dr Radhakrishnan said that respecting elders, peers, policies and systems of the organization is highly essential to be good leader.  When asked about the success story of ISRO, he said that nurturing work culture with due respect to fellow people in an organization makes it all so that everyone feels proud. He also said that the Organization, ISRO never suffered financial crunch and the Government has been extending excellent support for ISRO’s growth. He said these are 4G internet days and in near future, the world is going to witness 7G Space Roaming.
 
Earlier, Dr M R Suresh, Professor-Marketing, SDMIMD, Mysore, welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. The faculty members, staff members, students and invitees were present. 

MDP on Emotional Intelligence for Effective Leadership

Emotional intelligence has gained momentum over the years, in managing emotions intelligently and to dealing with people issues at the workplace. Especially, in the context of leadership effectiveness, this concept has proved to be imperative, in today’s business. Considering the prevailing situation, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) organized Management Development Program (MDP) on ‘Emotional Intelligence for Effective Leadership’, on 7 June 2019.

This program is aimed at facilitating the participants to appraise and appreciate issues and concerns a leader encounters in organizational situations while dealing with people, both individually and in teams. Through experiential learning and simulations, the program deliberated the various ways of leading in organizations, with the help of Emotional Intelligence, as an effective tool. Topics, such as leadership styles, leading teams, managing conflict, and emotion management, were discussed. 

Dr Nilanjan Sengupta, Professor – OB & HR and Dr Mousumi Sengupta, Professor – OB & HR, from SDMIMD were the resource persons for the program.

Around 30 participants from corporate and administrative heads of the institutions participated in the program.

Dr. Sunil MV, Coordinator of the program and faculty members were present.  

MDP on Predictive Analytics for Business Decision Making

A two-day MDP on “Predictive Analytics for Business Decision Making” was held on June 3 and 4, 2019. The hands-on program was designed to share the importance of predictive modelling in business, and, to discuss the predictive methods such as linear regression, logistic regression etc and their applications in decision making. The sessions were a blend of data analysis and debates on the application of methods.

Dr Srilakshminarayana G, Faculty - Quantitative Methods, SDMIMD was the resource person and Dr Sunil MV coordinated the program. 

MDP on HR for Non-HR Professionals

SDMIMD organized a two-day MDP on “HR for Non-HR Professionals” on 30 and 31 May 2019. The basic objective of the program was to address day-to-day people Management issues, faced by professionals, working in various departments, at the role of line managers, departmental heads, responsible for the team and individual performance.  The program discussed and deliberated the issues and challenges of communication, motivation, leadership and team building, irrespective of sectors and size of the companies. Especially, issues, such as self-awareness, conflict management, performance appraisal feedback, were discussed. 

Through management games, role plays, simulation exercises, the participants learnt certain techniques to effectively address such issues. The participants of the program consisted of executives from the corporate and academic sector. Dr Mousumi Sengupta and Dr Nilanjan Sengupta, Professors – HRM and OB, were the faculty resource persons for the program. The program received highly positive feedback and the participants opined that they got benefitted substantially from the program. Dr Sunil M. V. was the coordinator for the program. 

MDP on Behavioural Finance

 
A one-Day MDP on Behavioural Finance was organised for financial consultants and portfolio managers, involved in giving guidance to the investors and constructing a portfolio to the requirements on May 21, 2019, at SDMIMD. 
 
The program covered various biases and traits which are developed in the minds of the investors and the possible culmination of those biases while investing. The participants were provided with various cases of investors background and analysis was done with their contributions and the decision was moderated by the faculty resource person Prof. Kannadas S, Faculty-Finance, SDMIMD.
