Workshop on ‘Power of Self’ to SDMites

John Anster says ‘What you can do, or dream you can, begin it; Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!’ Our future may not be entirely within our control, but most of what we become is within our power to create. To understand this it requires a self-directed learning process, a clear roadmap and guidance on how to increase the effectiveness of change within you.  To introduce the students about the hidden power within them a series of workshop on the theme ‘The Power of Self’ was organized for the batch of PGDM 2016-18 during July 2017 by Dr. H. Gayathri, Dean Academics and Professor – Marketing. 

Counselling Workshop

Management education at SDMIMD ensures that students are up to the challenge of a volatile global market and be creative. Students are pushed to explore new ways of thinking and approaching business problems to bring their best ideas to the surface. To equip to these challenges a series of Counselling Workshop was conducted during June & July 2017 to the new batch (2017-19) of PGDM program. This year, Ms. Ruchika G. Naidu was the Counsellor and Program Designer for the said workshop. 

Pre-Conference Workshop on HRM: The Road Ahead

SDMIMD has organized the 5th International Conference on “Managing Human Resources at the workplace” on December 9 & 10, 2016. A pre-conference workshop was held on December 8, 2016, to discuss the latest trends in HRM, such as, HR Scorecard, role of HRM in organizational sustainability, Qualitative Research Methods in HRM, and IT in HRM
 
Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, Conference Chair welcomed the participants of the workshop. Dr. N. R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD spoke on the need for HRM in organizations and the road ahead.
 
Dr. Ashly Pinnington Dean-Research from British University in Dubai spoke on the relationship between organizational culture and leadership style in the technical and vocational institutions.  Role of HRM in nurturing organizational sustainability, with an inclusive approach, was discussed by Dr. Mousumi Sengupta, with various corporate illustrations. 
 
The other resources persons for the workshop were Professor Md. Minhaj and Prof. S.N Prasad. Dr. Gayathri, Deputy-Director, and other faculty members were present. 40 participants from all over the country attended the workshop. 

Workshop on Services Marketing

A Workshop of Services Marketing was organized on November 25, 2016 for the II year students of SDMIMD. Prof. Kasturi Rangan was the resource person for the workshop. Prof. Kasturi Rangan mainly focused on services in order to make student understand the importance of service design and to guide them how to look into minor details of services while designing on their journey of intrapreneurship and entrepreneurship. 
 
The Customer Benefit Concept (CBC), CUA Model, Internal Marketing Orientation (IMO), Line of Visibility (LOV), Consumer behavior in service setting, Physical and psychological cost of the service, and, Continuum of product attributes, were the topics covered in the workshop. The students had a chance to apply the learning in an assignment on start-up idea in the service industry.

Workshop on Social Responsibility and Sustainability

A one-day workshop on the theme of “Social Responsibility and Sustainability” was organised on November 17, 2016 preceding  the 2nd International Economics conference at the Institute. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kaliappa Kalirajan, Professor of Economics of Australian National University, and he followed up by delivering a session on the topic of the workshop.  Dr. Kalirajan presented a case study of Uttarakhand state in India relating to “Self Help Group – Social Responsibility Nexus”. Workshop on Social Responsibility and Sustainability

A one-day workshop on the theme of “Social Responsibility and Sustainability” was organised on November 17, 2016 preceding  the 2nd International Economics conference at the Institute. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Kaliappa Kalirajan, Professor of Economics of Australian National University, and he followed up by delivering a session on the topic of the workshop.  Dr. Kalirajan presented a case study of Uttarakhand state in India relating to “Self Help Group – Social Responsibility Nexus”.  
 
This was followed by a session from Dr. Stephen Aro- Gordon, Professor of Finance in Baze University, Nigeria who focused on the Sustainable Ranking Principles in Nigeria which include 4Ws and 1H of the sustainable banking in Nigeria. He stressed that the need for social responsibility is gaining significance in the context of uncharacteristic situation of rapid growth and high unemployment in Nigeria. 
 
In the post lunch session, Shri. Abhishek Ranjan, Global Head–CSR and Sustainability of Brillio Technology Ltd., in his talk emphasised  the need for responsible corporate practices towards society to sustain the growth. 
 
A Panel Discussion on the topic of “Mainstreaming Social Responsibility and Sustainability in Organisations” followed. The panel consisted of Dr. M. Indira, Professor of Economics, University of Mysore,     Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director & Professor-Finance, SDMIMD, Mysore, Shri. Sukumar Rangachari, Director, PointCross.com Pvt Ltd and MD, Ace Components & Electronics Pvt Ltd and Dr. Stephen ARO-GORDON, Professor – Finance, Baze University, Nigeria. The discussion was moderated by Dr. M.R. Suresh, Professor of Marketing, SDMIMD, Mysore. The panel did discuss different perspectives connecting to the theme of discussion including financial, social, economic, institutional,  and organisational, research . 
 
The workshop was attended by about 60 participants from different countries. The participants were mainly academics, research scholars and corporate executives.

Workshop on Business Analytics

SDMIMD in collaboration with ESC Pau Business School, France, organised a 3-Day Workshop on Business Analytics for the students of SDMIMD during October 3-5, 2016.  The workshop brought in perspectives on international and interdisciplinary dimensions to the elective course ‘Business Intelligence’ in PGDM Program. Dr. Lee Schlenker, Professor of Information Systems at the ESC Pau Business School, France, was the resource person, and it was coordinated by Prof. Mohamed Minhaj from SDMIMD. Apart from discussions on working in the Digital Economy and transforming data into Business Intelligence for effective business decisions, the workshop also exposed the participants to Visual Analytics using SAS, which is an analytics platform widely used by the corporate world. 

Pre Conference Workshop on Empirical Research in Finance

Dr. SSS. Kumar (Dean Academics) and Professor-Finance, Accounting and Control, IIM Kozhikode addressed the gathering on ‘Emerging Trends in Finance’. During the inaugural session, Dr.Kumar focussed on ‘Microstructure of Financial Markets’ and how research could be undertaken by the academic fraternity. Dr.M.Sriram, Conference Chair delivered a talk on ‘Time Series Analysis’. The session highlighted on the types of secondary data used in finance research, issues relating to usage of secondary data and tools to resolve them. The panel discussion on ‘Empirical Research in Finance- Topics, Analysis  and Models’ was spearheaded by Dr.N.R.Parasuraman, Director and Professor-Finance, SDMIMD and  the panel members  addressed various facets of teaching, research and publications in Finance and Accounting. Dr.Amitha Sehgal, visiting faculty, Welingkar Institute of Management, Mumbai spoke on ‘Research Ideas in Banking’ and suggested few contemporary issues surrounding banking sector. The valedictory session was addressed by Mr.S.S.Bhandare, Advisor, Tata Strategic Management Group, Mumbai, who gave a pep talk on ‘Reflections of Monetary Policy in India’. 
 
The workshop organized as a part of 5th International Conference on Emerging Trends in Finance, Accounting and Banking scheduled on August 19 & 20, 2016 was inaugurated by Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD. Dr. M. Sriram, Conference Chair welcomed the gathering and presented the theme of the workshop.
