FDP on Case Method, Its Rationale, Approach and Practice for Teaching and Research

Case method has emerged as an important pedagogic method in management curriculum at present. It is expected that management teachers have a working knowledge of case method. Further case method is now being in teaching other fields of social science such as education, law and efforts have been made to use cases for training in diverse fields such as engineering, medicine and applied sciences.
 
Case method of teaching is a powerful approach that opens new vistas in the minds of students when used in a systematic manner.It is imperative teachers acquire competence in this method. The relevance of case method is emphasised by global and national accreditation bodies. Professional bodies such as AIMA, AICTE are also encouraging the use of case method in teaching through different initiatives Increasingly case method is being used for higher level research as well. This stems from the need to examine unique situations and phenomenon. Corporates use case research to understand complex problem.
 
This FDP covers various dimensions of case method, its rationale and philosophy, for teaching as well as research.
The sessions planned are as follows (a few sessions may be merged):
 
  • Basics of case method
  • How to analyse a case
  • Demonstration of case usage in class
  • Case method for research
  • How to plan for writing a case
  • Demonstration of using a high level case in teaching
  • Brief panel discussion on challenges in using case method for teaching and research

Pedagogy: Lectures, Case discussions and Demonstration. 

Participants Expected Profile: Faculty members, Research Scholars, Corporates interested in documenting their company initiatives. Since there will be session on Case method for Research it can be made compulsory for SDMIMD  doctoral scholars
