‘Chief Financial Officer (CFO) has a pivotal role in operational and strategy formulation, the position demonstrate important part in the leadership structure across the globe’ thus said Mr. Viju Parameshwar, Former President & CEO, Kluber Lubrication India Private Ltd., in this keynote address on the topic “Role of CFO in a Manufacturing Company” during the inaugural session the 6th International Conference on Emerging Trends in Finance, Accounting and Banking on August 18, 2017.

Mr. Kesavan Venugopalan, Group CFO, Narayana Health, distinguished speaker for the inaugural session delivered talk on the topic “Finance – A Long Haul”. Mr. Kesavan highlighted as to how Finance as a function has gone through a rigorous change in the backdrop of changing economic scenario of the country. The speaker also highlighted the opportunities and challenges in the Health Care Industry and the role of finance and strategy in successfully managing a health care hospital.

Earlier, Dr. N.R. Parsauraman, Director, SDMIMD, delivered the welcome address and Dr. M. Sriram, Conference Chair, presented the theme of the conference “Emerging Trends in Finance, Accounting and Banking”.

The Chief Guest for the valedictory function Dr. Prasanna Chandra, Director of Centre for Financial Management, in his address introduced to the World of Finance through the lens of neuroscience, a perspective rarely encountered in the field of finance. Dr. Chandra made it interesting by throwing in anecdotes, quotes, poems and funny headings. His ability to relate cognitive and neural process was well received by the audience. Dr. Sriram, Conference Chair proposed the Vote of Thanks. 

Invited Talk by Dr. S.S.S. Kumar

The finance specialization students of PGDM 2016-18 Batch participated in the invited talk by Dr. S.S.S Kumar, Professor-Finance, Indian Institute of Management, Kohzhikode (IIM-K), on Friday, August 18, 2017. Dr. Kumar focused the talk on ‘Derivatives and the Commodity Market’. The tips and techniques provided by the speaker on how one can analyse and trade in the derivatives and commodity market was informative. The speaker emphasised the students to take part in situation- based learning exercises. This was followed by Q&A session.

Technical Session Speaker – Mr Sanjay Somasundara

Mr. Sanjay Somasundara, Deputy Vice President, Kotak Mahindra Life, Tamilnadu, the invited technical session speaker of International Finance Conference 2017 on Day-2, August 19, 2017; took the audience a complete tour through the Insurance market. The penetration mainly focused on the life insurance sector in India and the customer segmentation. Presenting the Ideal Financial planning, Mr. Sanjay informed the factors that are considered for savings, SIP and market timing. 

Invited talk on 'Financial Statements'

Dr. Durga Prasad Samantaray, Professor-Finance, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, was the invited speaker to deliver talk on 'Financial Statements' to PGDM 2016-18 on Friday, August 18, 2017. Dr. Prasad explained the Financial statements through a case study of a Saudi Arabian Company. Further, the speaker touched upon certain aspects of Valuation during his lecture.​

Technical Session Speaker – Mr. Pawan Kumar Kopparam

The technical session speaker of International Finance Conference 2017 on Day-2, August 19, 2017 Mr. Pawan Kumar Kopparam, Associate Vice-President, Investment Advisory, explained the global financial crisis; and presented the role of – Government, Banks and Borrowers with various Infographics which helped them understand the Global financial crisis better. Mr. Pawan Kumar shared the lessons learnt from this crisis. 

Technical Session Speaker – Mr Swaminathan Santhanam

Mr Swaminathan Santhanam, Independent IT Solutions Consultant, the technical session speaker on the Day-One of the International Finance Conference 2017 on August 18, 2017, talked about the start of the internet giving an example of escape browser as well as the evolution of digital age from Analogue-Digital-Connected (internet)-Social media to Smartphones on today’s date. Mr. Santhanam opined that almost 50 to 60% businesses are not prepared for the digital age in India the digital age is going to disrupt these unprepared businesses. Further he said, ‘In today’s digital age the average lifespan of a company has come down to 10 to 15 years from 60 years in the 80s and 90s.’ In order to sustain, should adapt to digital age’s changes and focus on advanced data analysis, RPA, cloud and SaaS’.

Technical Session Speaker – Mr Manoj Pasangha

The technical session speaker Mr Manoj Pasangha, Senior Vice President, Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited, Hyderabad, emphasised about the growth and importance of microfinance industries in India. Speaking on the Day-One of the International Finance Conference 2017 on August 18, 2017, shared his views on the development in technology which is leveraged to make the banking procedure more efficient and effective. Mr Manoj shared the success story about SKS Finance, biggest microfinance organisation in the country and its strategic reforms in the rural areas of India. Further, he discussed on how the organisation was successful in empowering women during demonetisation by enabling them to adopt technology in their monetary transactions. 

Pre Conference Workshop On Contemporary Issues in Finance, Accounting and Banking

Mr. S.N. Ananthasubramaniam, Past President, ICSI, New Delhi and Senior Partner in M/S Ananthasubramaniam & Co, inaugurated the One-day Pre-Conference Workshop on Contemporary Issues in Finance, Accounting and Banking on 17th August, 2017. The inaugural session by Mr. Ananthasubramaniam focussed on nuances of Corporate Governance norms and its mechanism in companies listed in stock exchanges. 
 
The workshop sessions by Dr. Krishna Prasanna, Associate Professor, Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, introduced research issues in Fixed Income Securities Market; the session by Mr. Rajat Singh, Chief Operating Officer, Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, discussed on the opportunities and challenges for Micro-finance Institutions. Further explained how micro-finance has gone through implementing financial inclusion of the Government. 
 
The panel discussion on ‘Empirical Research in Finance- Topics, Analysis and Models’ was spearheaded by Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director and Professor-Finance, SDMIMD; and Mr. B. Shivakumar, Chartered Accountant, Dr .Krishna Prasanna, IIT Madras; Dr. Durga Prasad Samantaray, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia; were the members. The panel discussion addressed various facets of teaching, research and publications in Finance. 
 
Earlier, Dr. M. Sriram, Conference Chair, welcomed the gathering and presented the theme of the workshop.
