Workshop on Giving Back to Society by Prof. Saju Jose

‘Due to the economic turmoil, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability issues are acquiring more value and importance, particularly in the business sector. Business financial success is inseparable from the environments and societies within which they work. Failing to account for longer-term social and environmental impacts makes business practices unsustainable. CSR and sustainability provide a competitive advantage’ thus said Dr. Saju Valliara Jose, Associate Professor – Marketing, College of Business, Abu Dhabi University, UAE, the faculty resource for the 2-Day Workshop on ‘Moving Forward by Giving Back – Corporate Social Responsibility’ held on August 3 & 4, 2022, at SDM Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD), Mysore.

The Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in business organizations is addressing various social problems such as community development, awareness building, environment protection, etc. The concern from the various stakeholders of a business entity to perform business in a more socially responsible manner has added towards such initiatives.  This has given them the edge for attracting investment, social inclusiveness, government benefits, etc. In view of this young managers should be aware and well-read about this social inclusiveness activity in the corporate world. The workshop addressed this requirement from an international perspective by Dr. Saju Jose, who visited SDMIMD as part of the Faculty Exchange Program.

The HR Specialization students for PGDM 2021-2023 Batch had an opportunity to share their thoughts, opinions, case learning, industry visits and above all the learning from their Socially Relevant Projects which they conduct as part of the PGDM program with Dr. Saju Jose, during the workshop. The real-life cases from both India and abroad; and the activities such as guessing the mission and the vision statements and creating CSR policies for a few industries like the construction industry, universities, airline industry, etc., made the workshop participants to get the holistic learning about CSR.

The informative, interactive and knowledge gaining workshop concluded with a group photo session with the visiting faculty.

'Imitating the West you don’t become a success, people appreciate it if you demonstrate your values' said Harsha Adya, Managing Director, Wuerth Electroniks.

Addressing students on ‘Building your brand on the world stage' on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Mr. Harsha said 'Trust factor develops when we have our own roots and culture; people see what is special within us. We have a lot of good core values, the ecosystem has grown and we can pass them on to the west. People are looking at different things; imitating the west will not make us successful as people are looking at different things.  Stand on your roots which are very important, please do not lose them if you lose them your identity is lost, you are Indian, and be proud of our core values'.

While speaking on competence, Harsha said Competence is more about not only knowing subsystems in-depth but it’s also knowing about the entire system and how it works. Hence I would like to stress not only concentrate on subsystems but look into the overall system which is very important today when technology is evolving. He also spoke on passion, the importance of planning and timeliness, and values & culture. While delivering talks on values and culture he called upon students to focus on long-term gains instead of short-term gains and build a very good professional network which is a pillar of success and which is also easy to get many things.

The new batch of PGDM 2022-2024 students, faculty members, and invited guests were present during the session which was arranged as part of the Orientation Program 2022.
