Convergence 3i: The SDMIMD-CII Annual Event of Industry-Academia Interaction 2022

Convergence 3i, the 'Industry-Institute-Interaction' event by SDMIMD, Mysore with CII-Mysore was held online on 22 Mar, 2022 from 11AM to 1PM.   The invited audience for this program were the Final Year degree students from across India, young executives and Degree completed students from Mysore and surrounding areas. SDMIMD students and faculty and several CII members from Mysore were present for the event. 
 
Ms. Supriya Salian, Chairperson- CII, Mysore Chapter delivered an energetic, thought provoking talk on “ Covid, WFH and Beyond: Opportunities for the Indian Youth” as the Chief Guest for the event, where in, she brought out the current business scenario and its realities. 
 
Later, in a panel discussion on “ How can I prepare myself to become more valuable to my employer: an employer’s perspective” with Dr. Dharma Prasad, Convener of the Industry-Institute Panel, CII Mysore with three student members, Ms. Jeyashri T, Mr. Swaroop A. Tehsildar and Mr. Guru Pranesh was held. Dr. Prasad SN, Deputy Director of SDMIMD was the moderator of this discussion. 
 
In the discussion, both the views of the employers as well as the aspirations of the youth were brought out by the panelists.  Over 120 students from across India participated in the event and the question-answer session which followed both the speech as well as the panel discussion were of high relevance to the student community. 
 
Dr. NR Parasuraman, Director SDMIMD gave the opening address, Prof. CV Sridhar, Faculty at SDMIMD gave the Vote of Thanks and Dr. Prasad SN introduced the audience to the purpose, significance and background of the event Convergence 3i which is being conducted for 12th year since 2010. 

Virtual Roundtable on Inspiring Women to Lead

At the virtual Roundtable discussion on “Inspiring Women to Lead” organized by SDMIMD and CII Mysuru Women Network Forum on February 28, 2022, Ms. Supriya Salian, Vice-Chairperson, CII Mysuru, spoke on the collaborative leadership style demonstrated by women leaders during the pandemic and the positive impact it has had on countries and organizations. She emphasized the need for industry and academia to deliberate on the ways to bring in more women into leadership positions. The event began with the welcome address by Dr. N. R. Parasuraman, Director SDMIMD, who stated that at SDMIMD every year efforts are on to increase the number of girl students and highlighted that over the last few years majority of the gold medalists have been ladies. 
 
The panel consisted of Mr. Pavan Ranga, Chairman, CII Mysuru & CEO, Rangsons LLP, Mr. Sukumar Rangachari, Past Chairman, CII Mysuru, Ms. Saraswati K S, Senior Project Manager, L&T Infotech Ltd, and Ms. Puja Mehra, Journalist and Author. Dr. Neetu Ganapathy, Associate Professor, SDMIMD, moderated the discussion in which various issues such as the barriers to women in leadership, leadership traits in women and steps that can be taken to inspire women to lead were raised.
 
Mr. Ranga was of the firm belief that women are increasingly important in building organizations as they make excellent mentors, and the future relies on mentor leadership rather than authoritarian leadership. He also stated that organizations should choose women to lead because of their competence and not their gender. The panelists agreed that women need to be focused, build the required competencies and be courageous. Ms. Roopa Rao, Convenor, CII Mysore Women Network Forum, emphasized the necessity of welcoming new possibilities for the desired change in organizations and society. Ms. Deepashree Narendran, Co-Convenor, CII Mysore Women Network Forum, delivered the vote of thanks. The session was attended by Dr. S. N. Prasad, Deputy Director SDMIMD, faculty, staff, alumni, and members of CII. Ms. Rachana M, student, SDMIMD, compered the event.

Orientation for the Awareness Program on Cyber Crime

'Technological advancement and the pandemic situation have changed modern life. The Internet allows us to use these technologies and connect to wider services and facilities. In a nutshell, the Internet touches almost all aspects of our lives. However, it also makes us vulnerable to a wide range of threats. New and powerful cyber-attacks are striking the Internet regularly. A minor lapse in managing our digital lives can open the door to cybercriminals' thus said Mr Anil Kumar N., Police Sub Inspector, Cyber Economic and Narcotics Crime (CEN) Police Station, Mysore. 
 
Mr Anil Kumar addressed the SDMIMD students involved in the Social Research Project (SRP) on Wednesday, December 29, 2021. Students have taken up the initiative to conduct a study to identify the need for an awareness program about Cyber Security among High School Students in the City as part of the Socially Relevant Project (SRP) of the academic program. 
 
The talk by Mr Anil Kumar sensitized the students involved in this initiative about the cyber crimes seen in the online classes, gaming, uploading content in social media, shopping websites, fake news, dating apps and other internet-enabled services. 
 
Speaking on occasion, Dr S.N. Prasad, Deputy Director, SDMIMD, said that awareness about Cyber Security is essential for all segments of society. It is more relevant to educate the parents who give their mobile phones and access to the OTT (Over The Top) platforms for entertainment like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, etc.

Understanding ‘Dharma in Action’ by SDMites

  
The PGDM 2021-23 visit to Dharmasthala on December 13-14, 2021 & PGDM 2020-22 on November 25-26, 2021. Students got the opportunity to see first-hand the numerous social activities going on in Dharmasthala, as well as have the opportunity of interacting with Chairman Dr D. Veerendra Heggade. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had a lot of good things to say about the inspiration they received on meeting Dr Heggade and being in the holy place.

SDMIMD has entered into a 5-year agreement with TCS iON for supplementary study for the entire PGDM students.  The partnership envisages corporate professional inputs for 8 select courses followed by an internship in an area of relevance to management.  SDMIMD students will also be able to undergo TCS’s reputed National Qualifier Test (NQT).  Students will get a joint certificate issued by SDMIMD and TCS iON certifying the supplementary study undergone
 
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Educational Partnership was exchanged by Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD and Sri. Ravindra Kembhavi, Head Sales and Chief Education Evangelist, TCSiON, in the presence of Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman, SDMIMD, on Friday, December 17, 2021.

In his address, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade expressed the view that the timing of this arrangement with TCS is very appropriate. In its growth phase, SDMIMD can make use of the expertise and strengths of TCS and work towards development of overall managerial awareness and exposure to our students. Another laudable feature of the initiative is that this facility is open to all our students starting from this year. This means that regardless of their intended specializations, they will stand to gain the practical touch from TCS. Coupled with their existing use of our Dharmasthala ethos and practices, the results are bound to be of great value to the corporate and business community.   Dr Heggade stressed that in this era when the content of higher education curriculum and teaching methods are matters of wide debate, practical exposures and value-added support from corporate bodies will always be welcome. TCS is a world-renowned organization with a high quality of professional practices. Students must seize this great opportunity being given to them and work hard to make themselves rounded individuals.
 
In his address, Mr. Ravindra Kembhavi, Head Sales and Chief Education Evangelist, TCSiON stated that this program focuses on bringing industry experts which is going to add value. He urged students to ask more questions and get involved as more questions give more energy. The learning helps students to understand the expectations of the corporate world.
 
Dr. N R Parasuraman, Director of SDMIMD called this arrangement a path-breaking collaboration for more corporatisation of orientation.  He expreseed that hope that in the coming years more aspects will get covered under the agreement

2nd Annual Convocation of the One-Year PGCM Program

The 2nd Annual Convocation of the One-Year Post Graduate Certificate in Management (PGCM) Program was held on December 17, 2021, at the Institute Auditorium
 
The Chairman of SDMIMD, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade awarded the PGCM certificates and delivered the convocation address.  
 
In his Convocation address, Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade shared the background behind the launching the 1-year program with the objective of catering to a segment which was seeking accelerated orientation with wider practical application. The faculty at SDMIMD have put together a curriculum and pedagogy for this 1-year program which differentiates itself from the 2-year program and yet retains the basic tenets of the Dharmasthala ethos – excellence blended with high values.  
 
Dr. N R Parasuraman in his address, gave an overview of the response that SDMIMD had to the cahallenging times of the pandemic.  He expressed the hope that the 1-year program will gain in popularity as time goes on and will be an effective compliment to the flagship PGDM offered by SDMIMD
 
Mr. Guruprasad Shreedhar Hegde received the gold medal for his Best Overall Performance from the Chairman.

Release of SDMIMD and SIRD Joint Report

SDMIMD and Abdul Nazir Sab State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (ANSSIRD & PR) joint work “Socio Economic Deprivation Status of Rural Households in Karnataka” was presented and released on December 16, 2021.
  
The report was released by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman, SDMIMD. Dr Heggade said, ‘The rural economy in Karnataka is in transition and the standard of living of households have improved, thanks to the efforts of government interventions and non-government organisations.’ 
 

Release of SDMIMD and SIRD Joint Report

SDMIMD and Abdul Nazir Sab State Institute of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (ANSSIRD & PR) joint work “Socio Economic Deprivation Status of Rural Households in Karnataka” was presented and released on December 16, 2021.
  
The report was released by Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman, SDMIMD. Dr Heggade said, ‘The rural economy in Karnataka is in transition and the standard of living of households have improved, thanks to the efforts of government interventions and non-government organisations.’ 
 
Dr. B. Venkatraja, the rincipal investigator of the project & Associate Professor of Economics in SDMIMD, said that the project estimated the multi-dimensional socio-economic deprivation status of more than 80 lakh rural households focusing on 16 key aspects of four major dimensions of livening such as housing, income and employment, assets and land and explored regional and demographic disparities, though it has reduced. The study has developed a scientific framework to measure multi-dimensional deprivations and it is the first effort of its kind in India.
 
Dr. G.S. Ganesh Prasad of ANSSIRD&PR, the co-investigator to the project said, ‘the framework and results are the benchmark for future studies. The report offers policy frameworks to bridge the gap in deprivation. One of the key recommendations towards this end was strengthening the Self Help Group-Panchayat Raj Institution convergence’. 
 
Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director of SDMIMD opined that the report would not only benefit the policy makers in identifying the deprivation areas but also benefit the community at large in the form of reduced gaps in deprivation after the policy implementation. 
 
Smt. Lakshmi Priya, Director of ANSSIRD&PR said that the report will be a very useful document to the government as it provides new directions to visualize the rural problems and different and effective ways to address them. 
 
Dr. Srilakshminarayana, the co-investigator to the project moderated the program and delivered vote of thanks.
