SDMIMD's Triumph of Learning in Ushus 2023

At Christ University's Ushus 2023, 11 students from SDMIMD embarked on a transformative journey, securing runner-up positions in key events such as the business plan, data analytics, and marketing. The experience offered a dynamic platform for applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, fostering strategic thinking and analytical insights. 
 
Engaging with industry experts and peers provided invaluable exposure, enriching their understanding of the multifaceted world of management. Beyond victories, the festival emphasized collaboration, building strong team dynamics that propelled growth and resilience. Ushus 2023 stands as a beacon of experiential learning, leaving an indelible mark on SDMIMD's academic journey and preparing participants for success in the dynamic realm of management.

Talk on 'Competing in the Age of AI'

Dr. Mohamed Minhaj, Professor - Systems, and Chairperson - Academic Programmes, delivered a talk on 'Competing in the Age of AI' to 100+ MBA prospects. The webinar was organized by IMS and coordinated by SDMIMD Admissions team. The webinar took place on December 5, 2023.

Invited talk by Dr. Rajesh Kumar

Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Dean and Professor of the School of Commerce and Management at Chanakya University, delivered a guest lecture to the finance students of SDMIMD held on December 2, 2023. He emphasized the significance of modeling and predictive analytics for finance students. He reviewed the fundamentals of crucial concepts using Excel. Subsequently, he employed Gretl software to demonstrate the regression process. Additionally, he outlined the steps involved in creating Blue and Garch models. At the end of the session, he also encouraged the students to develop models on their own.

Talk by Mr. Sanjay Kumar Sarda

Mr. Sanjay, Technology Leader in Cloud Engineering DevOps and Corporate Training in AWS , Azure and GCP,  delivered a guest talk (Virtual Mode) on managing cloud services and their industry impact on December 2, 2023. During the session, he discussed case studies from Netflix and Unilever, highlighting cost reduction strategies in these firms. The talk emphasized the broader impact and benefits of cloud services in the industry, shedding light on AI tools like AWS text recognition and the importance of ChatGPT. Exploring job prospects in cloud computing across sectors was a key focus. Furthermore, the session deliberated on the advantages of OCR and the scope of document management.

8th International Economics Conference

The 8th International Economics Conference was organized by SDMIMD on November 29-30, 2023 on the theme of “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends”. 
 
This annual conference was inaugurated by Mr. Udaya Kumar Hebbar, Managing Director, CreditAccess Grameen Limited. “Microfinance is now no longer micro, but has become a new asset class”, said Mr. Udaya Kumar Hebbar, in his keynote address. “ He further said, “Microfinance has been contributing silently by gradually bridging income and livelihood disparity and creating a platform for better gender parity, particularly in rural India. Alongside, through their initiatives, Microfinance Institutions contribute substantially to achieving Sustainable Development Goals by addressing poverty, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, amongst others”. In his address, Mr.Hebbar also outlined opportunities and challenges before the microfinance sector in this changing environment. He believes that the new harmonized microfinance guidelines by the regulatory authority envisage protecting customer interest. By enabling microcredit to the last mile of society the sector contributes to the inclusive growth of the rural economy, said Udaya Kumar Hebbar.
 
Dr.B. Venkatraja, Chairperson of the Conference, SDMIMD introduced the theme of the conference and highlighted the background. He opined that maintaining a balance between economic growth aspirations and the need for environmental protection is a critical aspect of sustainability.  Dr.Mohamed Minhaj, Chairperson of Academic Programs at SDMIMD gave an overview of how technologies and innovations drive the economy.
 
Sri. Pravin Iyer, Managing Director, Relicare Tech Services, Dr. Davood Askarany, Senior Lecturer, Business School, Accounting and Finance, The University of Auckland (NZ) and Dr Basavaraju R, Executive Director, GRAAM were the other distinguished speakers of the conference. Sri. Sriram Ranganathan, Vice President and Global Tax Head at Wipro Limited and Sri. Vijaykrishnan Venkatesan, Chairman, CII Karnataka State Council & Managing Director, Kennametal India Ltd delivered the valedictory address. 
 
The two-day conference deliberated on 130 academic research papers presented by academicians and research scholars from different reputed institutions. Several emerging issues and trends relating to the economy, growth, and sustainability were deliberated. 

Speech by Mr. Vijaykrishnan Venkatesan, Chairman, CII Karnataka

Mr. Vijaykrishnan Venkatesan, Chairman, CII Karnataka State Council & Managing Director, Kennametal India Ltd was the Chief Guest to the valedictory session of the two-day 8th International Economics Conference on the theme of “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends” on November 30, 2023. While talking about economic growth and sustainability, Mr.Venkatesan was trying to present an overview of the paradoxical scenario between them. Some of the basic industrial sectors such as steel, pharma, cement, chemical, fertilizer, etc were driving the development of the economy with their growth but negatively affected the environment and sustainability. He called for a balanced approach to development wherein more growth does not affect sustainability. Mr.Venkatesan considers governance as an important element and calls upon the industry and the government to follow high standards of governance. The session was attended by conference delegates, academicians and students.

Address by Sriram Ranganathan, VP-Wipro Ltd.

Mr. Sriram Ranganathan, Vice President and Global Head of Taxation at Wipro Ltd delivered the valedictory address to the two-day 8th International Economics Conference on the theme of “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends” on November 30, 2023. In his address, Mr Sriram presented an overview of the current state of the Indian economy. He said that India is a country of immense growth opportunities as many of the sectors have shown strong resilience to the COVID-19 pandemic and geo-political factors. He believes that the Indian demography can be translated into a dividend which requires proper man-power planning. Mr.Sriram considers regular and continuous up-skilling and re-skilling of the employees as a critical force of productivity and growth. He also outlined the risks and challenges of the growth of the Indian economy. The session was attended by conference delegates, academicians and students.

Session on Social Enterprises

In a thought-provoking session at the two-day 8th International Economics Conference, Dr. Basavaraju R, Executive Director of the Grassroots Research and Advocacy Movement (GRAAM), delivered a talk in the realm of social enterprise. He shed light on the challenges obstructing economic growth, such as unskilled labor, financial illiteracy, labor movement complexities, and women's participation hurdles, particularly at rural economy.  The speaker highlighted the crucial role of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in driving economic growth as their contributions through innovation, microfinance, job creation, and community empowerment shape and propel societal advancement. He meticulously outlined the impactful policies and laws that can drive development, ranging from RTI and MGNREGA to initiatives addressing child labor, environment, and disability. The session delved into the essence of social enterprise, dissecting the concept of a social business model. 

This session was delivered on November 30, 2023, as a technical session to two-day the 8th International Economics Conference on the theme of “Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends”. The session was attended by conference delegates, academicians and students.
