Workshop on the Craft of Case Writing: From Idea to Impact

SDMIMD organized a one-day workshop on “The Craft of Case Writing: From Idea to Impact” on August 29, 2025. The session was facilitated by Dr. K. Riyazahmed, Associate Professor of Finance at SDMIMD.
 
The workshop was designed to provide participants with hands-on experience in the complete process of case study development, right from idea generation to preparing a solid first draft. It combined key methodological foundations with practical exercises, enabling participants to transform their ideas into compelling and well-structured case drafts.
 
Participants also gained valuable insights into the finer aspects of case crafting, particularly the requirements and standards for acceptance by reputed international publishers such as Ivey Publishing, Emerald, and SAGE. The workshop attracted over 20 participants, including academicians, research scholars, and field experts from across the country.

Facilitator’s Profile

Dr. K. Riyazahmed is an accomplished academic and an internationally recognized case writer with a deep passion for case pedagogy. With extensive experience both in authoring and mentoring case writing, his work has been widely acknowledged in premier platforms. His case studies have been published by Harvard Business Review, Ivey Publishing, Emerald, and SAGE, with 19 case studies published in the last four years alone.
 

Several of Dr. Riyazahmed’s cases have earned accolades as Editors’ Choice selections in global publications. His expertise has led to multiple nominations by Ivey Publishing for the Best-Case Writer and Best Case in Finance and Banking, under prestigious international competitions organized by EFMD and The Case Centre.
 
An engaging facilitator, Dr. Riyazahmed has conducted numerous workshops on the craft of case writing and is frequently invited as a resource person by academic institutions and professional bodies. His contributions to the case community include serving as a jury member at AIMA’s Case Conference and Competition 2025, reflecting his thought leadership in the domain.
 
In addition to his case writing accomplishments, Dr. Riyazahmed serves as an Associate Editor of Springer Nature Business and Economics (Scopus-indexed), and reviews for several reputed journals listed in the ABDC list, including The Case Journal (Emerald – Scopus) and other SAGE publications.

Workshop on ‘Resilient Leader: Cultivating Wellness for Peak Performance’ by Mr. A.R. Dwarakanath

SDMIMD organized a workshop on ‘Resilient Leader: Cultivating Wellness for Peak Performance’ as part of the Orientation Program for the PGDM 2025–27 batch. The session was conducted by Mr. A.R. Dwarakanath, Yoga Trainer, on July 11, 2025.
 
During the session, Mr. Dwarakanath stated, “Improving shareholder value is the prime task of any business organization. Therefore, companies need individuals who can think strategically and build sustainable business models, rather than those with cognitive bias.”
 
He emphasized that healthy individuals are crucial for organizational success and highlighted that resilient leaders must think beyond boundaries and focus on simple actions that can have a long-term impact.

Dr. Hema Harsha Delivers Session on Indian Business Law and Intellectual Property Rights

Dr.  Hema Harsha, Associate Professor at Birla Institute of Management, Bengaluru, delivered a comprehensive session exploring key areas of Indian business law for the PGDM students. She began with the Indian Contract Act, 1872, highlighting the essentials of enforceable agreements, the elements of a valid contract, and legal remedies available in case of breach.
 
Dr. Harsha then provided an overview of the Companies Act, focusing on company formation, the significance of the Memorandum and Articles of Association, directors’ responsibilities, and the legal rights of shareholders. She emphasized the importance of well-drafted legal documentation—including contracts, resolutions, and constitutional documents—for ensuring corporate clarity and compliance.
 
The session concluded with an in-depth discussion on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), covering trademarks, copyrights, patents, industrial designs, and trade secrets. She explained the procedures for registration, the scope of protection, enforcement mechanisms, and the strategic role of IPR in protecting innovation and enhancing business value.
 
The session offered students valuable legal perspectives relevant to the business world and reinforced the importance of legal literacy for future managers and entrepreneurs.

Shri. C.K. Sabareeshan Delivers an Insightful Session on ESG and the Role of Independent Directors

On June 28, 2025, Shri. C.K. Sabareeshan, Independent Director at BPL Ltd. and Panasonic Appliances Ltd., delivered an engaging session for the PGDM 2024–26 batch on the topic “ESG – Responsibilities and Role of Independent Directors.
 
Shri. Sabareeshan elaborated on the crucial role independent directors play in upholding ethical governance, providing constructive oversight, and acting in good faith. He discussed ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting standards and highlighted the practical challenges organizations face while implementing ESG frameworks.
 
Drawing from real-life corporate cases such as ICICI, Wells Fargo, and Satyam, he emphasized the importance of sustainable business practices. The session shed light on the relevance of ESG in managing carbon footprints, waste, and renewable energy, while aligning business strategies with stakeholder expectations.
 
The session offered students valuable insights into how corporate governance and ESG go hand-in-hand in today’s dynamic business environment.

Workshop on Stress Management and Work-Life Balance by Dr. Ashish Mohan

Dr. Ashish Mohan, Founder and Principal Consultant at Interactive Management Development and Fellow – BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt, Berlin, Germany, conducted an insightful workshop for the PGDM 2024–26 batch on the topic "Stress Management and Work-Life Balance" on June 27, 2025.
 
The workshop featured interactive discussions centered around real-life workplace challenges, enabling students to grasp the critical importance of maintaining mental well-being in a professional setting. Dr. Mohan emphasized the increasing relevance of work-life balance in today’s demanding and fast-paced corporate environment.
 
A key highlight of the session was a case study involving a manager navigating toxic work culture, stress, and burnout. This case offered students a realistic view of how such challenges can affect both professional performance and personal health.
 
The session also included a personality assessment exercise, helping participants gain deeper self-awareness. Dr. Mohan concluded the workshop with practical strategies for managing stress, maintaining focus, and building resilience through discipline, motivation, and self-reflection.

Workshop on Value-Based Selling by Mr. Varun Kumar, Intel Corporation

Mr. Varun Kumar, Segment Lead – Edge Computing Group at Intel Corporation, Bengaluru, conducted an engaging workshop for the PGDM 2024–26 batch on the topic "Practical Approach to Value-Based Selling with Real-Life Case Studies" on June 26, 2025.
 
Drawing from his rich experience in sales, Mr. Varun shared valuable insights into the real-world challenges of engaging with customers and building a successful career in sales. He emphasized the importance of a practical approach to value-based selling and discussed key pricing methodologies that drive sales effectiveness.
 
A key highlight of the session was his introduction to the MEDDPICC sales qualification framework, equipping students with a structured tool for professional sales strategy and execution.
 
The workshop was highly informative and helped bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry practice, offering students a clear understanding of modern sales approaches and value-driven client engagement.

Case Workshop by Prof. Vasant Sivaraman

SDMIMD had the privilege of hosting Prof. Vasant Sivaraman, Professor at SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai. He had interactive sessions with the Faculty on best practices of crafting teaching cases on December 17, 2024. Prof. Vasant shared his experience and expertise of case writing and teaching which was very insightful and highly received.  The event was held at the SDMIMD campus.  Dr S N Prasad Director SDMIMD  delivered opening remarks to the program. Dr B Venkatraja, Chairperson- SDM Research Centre for Management Studies welcomed and introduced the Guest.

Brief Profile of the Resource Persons:

Dr. Keerthan Raj is an Associate Professor in Marketing at SDMIMD and is an accomplished educationist and administrator with 23 years’ split as a twofold experience - in leading major multinational banks and academia, having handled leadership roles as Dean for Academics, Research and Administration. She is an alumnus of IIM Indore, also having completed an Executive Programme in Digital Marketing from IIM Indore.
Dr. S. Saibaba, with over 23 years of industry and academic experience, specializes in AI-driven marketing, marketing analytics (R & Python), and marketing metrics. He is an experienced educator and trainer, focusing on data-driven decision-making, innovation, and design thinking. Proficient in tools like Excel, SPSS, and Tableau, Dr. Saibaba has contributed extensively to teaching, research, and professional development in marketing.
